Four young people find themselves in a seemingly dead city, K., awaiting an undefined Event.
The story
In a seemingly dead city, K., four young people appear to be waiting for an undefined Event. With very little dialogue, the film presents their uncertain predicament as they must find their bearings on their own. Golubeva speaks in a low voice, almost as if to herself.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is dated 1991, but was shot in 1989–1990. It anticipates events that took place after the August coup of 1991. The film is commonly described as an anti-history of four young people in some dead city, K. The city really is dead on the surface: Bartas’s shooting locations are almost always the same—abandoned sheds, cheap hotels, empty piers, provincial taverns with grand Russian drinking bouts to 1990s hits, and dark corners: places inhabited by dark energy (not in the folkloric, everyday sense, but in the philosophical and cosmological one), places where there is no light. There is very little dialogue in the film; Golubeva speaks in a low voice, almost as if to herself (the style of this film would define her acting in all her subsequent films once and for all). The characters seem to be constantly waiting for some Event that never comes. They will have to find their bearings on their own, and not always successfully.
