The story

In his twenties, Walter Verra returns from Rome to Turin after fifteen years, where his father is a Tuscan-born factory worker and his mother is silent and depressed. Disoriented by the city, he finds an emotional point of reference in his aunt Caterina, who lives in the countryside outside Turin, though he cannot always be close to her. Walter enrolls in philosophy at Palazzo Nuovo but rejects the bureaucratic, pompous academic world. Apathetic and cynical, he struggles with the responsibilities expected of him. Called up for civilian service, he is assigned to an assistance center frequented by nomads and non-EU immigrants, where he tries to make himself useful.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Walter Verra is a young man in his twenties who returns from Rome to Turin after 15 years, to his parents: his father, a factory worker of Tuscan origin, and his silent, depressed mother. He remains disoriented by the new reality of the Savoy city. Only his aunt Caterina remains an emotional point of reference for him, although she will live in the countryside outside Turin, and he cannot always be close to her. The young man enrolls in the Faculty of Philosophy at Palazzo Nuovo, but cannot accept the bureaucratic and pompous academic world. He lives life on his own terms, apathetically and cynically, like a young man unable to take on the responsibilities imposed on him by the adult world around him. After receiving his call-up for civilian service, he ends up at an assistance center frequented by nomads and non-EU immigrants, where he tries to make himself useful. But disillusionment and the difficulties arising from the complexities of the oppressive world around him will test his journey of growth, shaped by a salvific relationship with his aunt and by conflict with his father and mother.
