The story
Lucy Kelson is a lawyer specializing in historic preservation and environmental law in New York City. When she attempts to stop the destruction of a community center she grew up with, she is hired by George Wade, a wealthy and reckless real estate developer. Despite their opposing views, Lucy accepts the job because of the discretionary funding he offers for her causes and his promise to protect the center. However, she quickly finds herself becoming George's indispensable assistant, handling all aspects of his life, leading to a strained professional and personal dynamic.

Lucy Kelson, a lawyer for historic preservation, is hired by billionaire developer George Wade to replace his Chief Counsel. Though they have opposing views on real estate, Lucy agrees to work for him to secure funding for her causes and his promise to save a Coney Island community center. Lucy becomes George's indispensable assistant, eventually giving him two weeks' notice after he disrupts a friend's wedding. George prevents her from finding other work, and they eventually share a drunken night on his yacht where they kiss. When a new hire, June Carver, arrives and becomes close with George, Lucy becomes jealous. She discovers George intends to demolish the community center despite his promise and confronts him at a hotel, finding him with June. After Lucy leaves, George realizes he needs to change. He finds Lucy, reveals he kept his promise to save the center, and they declare their feelings for each other. George resigns, and they end up together.
