U-900 (2008)

Essen-Kray, April 1944: Black-market trader Atze Schröder sleeps with General Strasser’s wife and gets caught. While hiding from Strasser, he learns that the general is planning a shipment aboard the submarine U-900, traveling by sea from Toulon through the Strait of Gibraltar to Warnemünde. However, Atze learns nothing about the cargo: the Holy Grail. He steals the uniforms of the submarine captain, Strasser, and Strasser’s adjutant. Together with his Jewish friend Samuel, whom he is hiding from the Nazis in his basement, he plans to escape to New York aboard the hijacked submarine. To get to France, the two of them commandeer actress Maria’s van. Once there, they persuade Maria to help them get on board, since three officers are expected. The only person on board who becomes suspicious is Lieutenant von Stetten. After a long odyssey, the three are exposed. Once General Strasser has been brought aboard, he changes course for Buenos Aires. Samuel manages to sabotage the compass so that the submarine heads for New York again. Just before they reach the coast, an American reconnaissance plane spots them. The Americans then give the order to attack. At this point, Atze reveals Strasser’s real plan: he intends to escape to Buenos Aires with the Holy Grail, where he has already bought a villa. The crew then mutinies and overpowers Strasser. Over the radio, Atze tells the Americans that they come in peace and will bring them “heaven on earth.” The Americans take his message to mean that he is bringing them the Holy Grail, and let the submarine enter the harbor. Schröder, however, means that he wants to bring them French fries. Since his first homemade deep fryer has broken, and unaware of the goblet’s true significance, he uses the Holy Grail to fry the potatoes. Von Stetten, Strasser, and Strasser’s adjutant are arrested, and Atze opens a fast-food stand with Maria and Samuel.
