The story

Gitta Rebus, a laboratory technician at a power plant near the German-Polish border, has a poor reputation in her town because of her manner and many relationships with men. She falls in love with Jerzy, a Polish guest worker who has come to East Germany to build cooling towers, and they quickly become a couple. In Gitta’s hometown, an abandoned warehouse once served as a concentration camp. Jerzy’s father died there during the Second World War, while Gitta’s father worked there as a guard in the war’s final months; he and Gitta have never discussed this in detail.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gitta Rebus is in her early twenties and works as a laboratory technician at a power plant near the German-Polish border. Because of her manner and her many relationships with men, she does not always have the best reputation in the town where she lives. One day, however, Gitta falls in love with Jerzy, a guest worker from Poland who came to East Germany to build cooling towers. The two become a couple within a short time. In Gitta’s hometown of Zaspenhain stands a warehouse that has been empty for several decades and once served as a concentration camp. Among others, Jerzy’s father died there during the Second World War. Gitta’s father, Alfred, who has lived in West Germany since 1957, worked there as a guard during the final months of the war, though he and his daughter have never spoken about it in any detail. When Jerzy happens to overhear a conversation between the two in which Gitta says she had already bet in advance on winning Jerzy’s love, he leaves in outrage and returns to Poland. But Gitta is now pregnant by him and is left alone. At times, she thinks about suicide. Then she begins to hope that Jerzy might perhaps return from Poland after all.
