The story

Malisard reports for Le Soir de Paris, where Prévot, his colleague, is a photographer. The two men roam Paris looking for small events for the paper’s local-news column. Malisard accompanies Prévot to collect his two boys from school. Afterward, they stop at the scene of a jewelry-store burglary and lose sight of the children, whom they have left in the street. Unable to find the boys, the two friends—preoccupied with crime stories—fear they have been kidnapped and set out to search for them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Malisard (Philippe Noiret) is a reporter for Le Soir de Paris, where his colleague Prévot (Pierre Richard) works as a photographer. Together, they roam the streets of Paris looking for minor events to cover in the newspaper’s local-news column. Malisard accompanies Prévot as he goes to pick up his two boys from school. After collecting them, they stop at the scene of a jewelry-store burglary and lose sight of the children, whom they have left in the street. A passerby takes the boys to a nearby childminder. Unable to find them, the two friends, obsessed with crime stories, think the children have been kidnapped and set out to search for them. When their newspaper’s editor-in-chief (Claude Piéplu) is told the children have disappeared, he blows the story out of proportion to make it the front-page headline in the next edition.
