At summer camp, an eleven-year-old’s growing closeness with an older boy is tested when their actions lead to separation.

The story

Eleven-year-old Lena spends her summer vacation at a holiday camp, where she meets Wolfgang, a year older, and they spend much of their time together, to the annoyance of her roommate Antonia. After counselor Susanne catches Wolfgang trying to visit Lena in her room, camp director Mr. Eichler threatens to transfer him, believing Susanne is not strict enough. During an outing, Lena and Wolfgang sit apart from the group by the lakeshore while the others take a boat trip; the group returns late, and Eichler carries out his threat. Upset by the separation, Lena sees Wolfgang enjoying himself with the other children and thinks he has lost interest in her; her appeal to Eichler is unsuccessful.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eleven-year-old Lena spends her summer vacation at a holiday camp. There she meets Wolfgang, who is a year older, and the two spend a lot of time together—to the annoyance of Lena’s somewhat vain and arrogant roommate, Antonia. When Wolfgang tries to visit Lena in her room one evening, counselor Susanne catches him. The camp director, Mr. Eichler, thinks Susanne is not strict enough with the children and threatens Wolfgang with a transfer to another group. During an outing, Lena and Wolfgang wander away from the group and sit alone by the lakeshore while the others go on a boat trip. As a result, the group returns late, and Eichler carries out his threat. Lena is upset about being separated from Wolfgang. From a distance, she sees him having fun with the other children and thinks he is no longer interested in her. She asks Mr. Eichler in vain to reverse his decision. At a disco evening, Lena waits in vain for Wolfgang to ask her to dance. Then everyone laughs when another boy pours cola over her skirt, and she decides to run away. She accuses Wolfgang of being a coward because he is now following all the rules. He, however, thinks she is a coward for wanting to run away. Early the next morning, she disappears, and everyone frantically searches for her. She walks to the nearest village, buys something to eat, gets a ride part of the way from a farmer on the trailer of his tractor, and spends the night in a barn. By then, Mr. Eichler has notified the police and is driving all over in search of Lena, but he cannot find her. Wolfgang has a hunch. He rides a bicycle to the spot by the lakeshore where they had sat together and finds Lena there. They talk things out, and he manages to convince her to return with him.
