Full plot (contains spoilers)
The world collapses around Horst Lebrecht, a very young adult, when one day he discovers his parents’ secret. Until then, he had believed that his father, Regierungsrat Dr. Lebrecht, and his mother had a model marriage. But by chance, he discovers that both parents are betraying each other. His father, a senior civil servant, has embarked on an affair with his secretary, while his mother, Magda Lebrecht, is in turn cheating on her husband with Bob Sommer, a bus driver who is considerably younger than she is. Horst does not want to stand by and watch his parents’ marriage fall apart, and tries to intervene. But things get worse: his own sister, Monika, falls for the charms of a former pilot. Horst now begins to lose control. In the first act of his deep despair, Bob the driver’s vehicle is the target: Horst tampers with the brakes on Bob’s car. This leads to a serious accident with fatal consequences.
