A cynical aristocrat and a rigorously moral, devoted wife seem destined never to meet—until fate intervenes.

The story

In spring 1826, Count Charles de Lapalmmes is a charming, brilliant, cultured aristocrat who has grown cynical and debauched. After several changes of regime, he has become detached from politics and morality, and lives chiefly for his own pleasure. Mathilde Leroy is his opposite: the faithful wife of a wealthy man, devoted to her husband and guided by a traditionalist, almost rigorist morality. Living far from the realities of the world, Mathilde and Charles appear to have little in common and no reason to cross paths. Yet fate brings these two very different people toward an encounter.

A faithful wife to a wealthy man, devoted to her husband and guided by a traditionalist, almost rigorist morality, she lives far removed from the realities of the world. These two people, so utterly different, clearly should never have met. And yet fate is unpredictable…
