Full plot (contains spoilers)
Julia Banks is questioned by police after the body of her abusive ex-boyfriend Michael Vargas is found in her home. Despite a restraining order, police find evidence of intimacy between Julia and Michael. Flashbacks reveal that six months prior, Julia moved in with David Connover and his daughter Lily. David's ex-wife, Tessa, is obsessed with David and hates Julia. Tessa steals Julia's phone, engagement ring, and panties, using Julia's identity to lure Michael into a sexual encounter. Tessa also manipulates situations to make Julia look like a bad parent. Eventually, Tessa lures Michael to Julia's home; he attacks Julia, but she wounds him and escapes. Tessa then stabs Michael and frames Julia for the murder. David eventually discovers Tessa's lies and is held captive by her. Julia arrives to rescue him, leading to a final confrontation where Tessa commits suicide by pulling herself onto a knife. Six months later, Julia and David are married and living in San Francisco, but they are interrupted by the arrival of Tessa's mother, Lovey.
