A mysterious amnesiac becomes the focus of a nationally followed identity dispute when two families claim him as their own.

The story

In 1927, a photograph of an unidentified amnesiac—without memory, papers, or money—appears in newspapers after he has spent a year in the Collegno mental asylum. A family from Verona comes forward, and a man who visits the asylum is convinced the stranger is his missing brother, Professor Giulio Canella. Giulia Canella, accompanying him, is less certain, but the man is taken to Verona and gradually rehabilitated as the family attempts to restore their former life together. Then a claim from Turin challenges their belief: a woman with children identifies the stranger as her husband, a printer accused of thefts and swindles.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1927, a photograph was published in several newspapers of a man with no memory, identification papers, or money, who had been a patient at the Collegno mental asylum for a year. Only one family came forward, from Verona. A man who went to Collegno to meet the mysterious amnesiac was convinced that he was his brother, Professor Giulio Canella, who had been reported missing in Macedonia during the war. The woman accompanying him, Giulia Canella, was not entirely convinced, but it was decided to take the man to Verona, where he would gradually be rehabilitated, until the love they had once shared was rekindled between them. Suddenly, a request arrived from Turin for the man to be imprisoned, because a woman with children claimed he was her husband. He was supposedly a printer guilty of various thefts and swindles. The case became very complex and attracted national attention. The trials went through several stages. Giulia supported him with courage and devotion. The man ended up serving two years in prison out of the four-year sentence he had received. After that, the Canella family (they had had two children) moved to Brazil, where he died in 1941.
