Brigadier Winkelmann’s colleagues in Thuringia promise to send “their best man,” but Otto Vegesack proves a clumsy worker, and mishaps follow. Full plot (contains spoilers)
A major construction site in East Berlin, where numerous new apartment buildings are to be built as part of the GDR’s housing construction program, has been suffering from a severe staff shortage for some time. The colleagues from Thuringia have long been promising Brigadier Winkelmann that they will soon send him “their best man.” But this Otto Vegesack turns out to be a blunderer with two left hands. As a result, minor and major mishaps occur at the construction site. Otto Vegesack’s private life is similarly bumpy. At a motorway rest stop on his way to Berlin, he met the attractive Petra, fell head over heels in love with her, and then came to believe he had found the great love of his life. But first he has to convince Petra of that. When things with Petra go nowhere, Otto meets Dagmar, a single mother. Over time, the two grow closer and come to like each other, but Dagmar’s daughter initially finds it difficult to get used to the new man by her mother’s side. In the end, Otto proves himself at the construction site and finds happiness in his private life.
