When two families discover that their sons were switched at birth, they must navigate the emotional consequences of finding their biological children.
The story
After their son Tomek is hospitalized following a bicycle accident, Anna and Paweł learn that he is not their biological child. As they search for his biological parents, they are directed to the Schneider family in Dresden, and Anna attempts to make contact. The two families discover that the boys’ parentage is intertwined: Tomek is the Schneiders’ biological son, while the Kowalskis have been raising Oskar. The families meet at the Kowalskis’ holiday house by a lake. Though the initial meeting is warm and the boys become friends, suspicion and competing interest in both children complicate the relationship between the parents.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After their son Tomek is admitted to hospital following a bicycle accident, his parents, Anna and Paweł, learn that he is not their biological son. As they search for his biological parents, an archivist gives them the address of the Schneider family, who live in Dresden. Anna immediately travels there and tries to make contact with the German family. The two mothers also get in touch outside the son’s school. The Schneiders, for their part, learn that they are not Oskar’s biological parents and that Tomek is actually their biological son. Since Anna has invited them to Poland, the three of them visit the Kowalskis at their parents’ holiday house by a lake. Although the meeting is initially warm and the two boys become friends, mutual suspicion persists, and both the Kowalskis and the Schneiders show an interest in both children. When the children secretly row out onto the lake at night and a storm begins to gather, the two sets of parents first come into conflict, but then set out together to search for the boys. This exceptional situation also eases relations between them. Anna and Maria eventually find the children in a shelter on the shore. It becomes clear that Tomek runs to Anna, while Oskar runs to Maria, settling where they belong.
