Unter Nachbarn (2011)

The newspaper journalist David has moved from Berlin to Karlsruhe. The outgoing man befriends his new neighbor, Robert, a nurse who lives alone. During a drive together in David’s car, they have an accident in which Janine is killed. David had only just met her at a nightclub. Robert urges David to flee the scene. David has to report on his own accident for the newspaper, and in the process meets Janine’s sister, Vanessa. The two grow closer. David is tormented by guilt and wants to make amends to Vanessa for his mistakes. But the jealous Robert wants David all to himself at any cost and interferes in his life. After disposing of David’s wrecked car on his own and giving David a false alibi to the police, he tries to sabotage David’s relationship with Vanessa. He also turns up on a kayaking trip the two take together. Vanessa capsizes her kayak while fleeing from him, and David only just manages to save her. When she discovers that the men’s alibi is false, she wants to confront David, but his neighbor Robert overpowers her. He abducts her to his cabin by the forest lake, where he used to go fishing with David. He sets a trap by knocking Vanessa unconscious, luring David to the cabin, and alerting the police at the same time; they overpower David, believing him to be the culprit. When the police inform Robert that Vanessa has survived, he rows out onto the lake. Finally, as in the film’s opening shot, his empty boat is seen drifting on the lake.
