The story
A Swedish couple leave poverty behind and seek a new life in America.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the mid-19th century, Kristina Nilsson and her husband Karl Oskar leave poverty in Småland for a new life in America. Unlike the books and Jan Troell’s film adaptations from the 1970s, this film, like the 1990s musical Kristina from Duvemåla, is told more from Kristina’s perspective than Karl Oskar’s. Greater emphasis is also placed on their time in the United States rather than on the hardships in Sweden.
