The story

Fifteen-year-old Darek lives with his father and younger sister Ema in a small Czech village near the German border. Since their mother died, he has lovingly cared for Ema, who has a disability. When his father loses his job, he accepts an offer from his German friend Uli to turn their meadow into a paddock for old or injured horses. Darek discovers how much he loves the horses and devotes himself to their care. His commitment impresses Hanna, a girl his age who likes him, but he assumes she will choose someone more attractive. Meanwhile, his father's neglect of family responsibilities leaves Darek taking responsibility for appointments with the youth welfare office.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Fifteen-year-old Darek lives in a small village in the Czech Republic near the German border with his father and his younger sister Ema, who has a disability and whom he lovingly cares for since their mother died. When his father loses his job, he accepts an offer from his German friend Uli to turn his meadow into a horse paddock and care for old or injured horses there until they can be sold again. Darek discovers how much he loves horses and throws himself wholeheartedly into this new responsibility. This impresses Hanna, a girl his own age who likes him too, but he assumes he will lose her to a more attractive suitor. Because his father neglects his family responsibilities and, in particular, avoids all appointments with the youth welfare office, Darek has to take on that responsibility as well, which leads to a few small adventures. Darek does not think much of his father, but in several flashbacks his mother assures him that he only has to discover his father's good heart. While Darek is away at a 14-day sports camp, he learns that the horses he has cared for are to be sold to a slaughterhouse. With no money, he sets off for home at once, mostly on foot, but arrives too late—only one horse remains, the one that belonged to Ema. Devastated and blaming all the adults, he withdraws. His father finds him and makes it clear that he knew nothing about Uli's business plans either and immediately cancelled the contract. He says he desperately needed money just to keep the family afloat. After this conversation, Darek is able to build a new relationship with his father.
