The story

Four feature-film episodes examine intimacy and relationships, with gynecologist and psychotherapist Eberhard Schaetzing twice interrupting the stories to address the audience. One follows Heinz and Ilse shortly before his marriage to Gisela, who is herself attracted to her childhood friend Achim. Another centers on schoolgirl Jutta’s interest in her married teacher, Günther, and his wife Monika’s response. A third follows 17-year-old Barbara, whose mother keeps her away from men, and her brother Thomas’s challenge to their parents. The final episode focuses on two friendly couples and suspicions surrounding one husband’s possible affair.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The four feature-film episodes are interrupted and commented on twice by gynecologist and psychotherapist Eberhard Schaetzing, who addresses the audience directly. In the first episode, Does Marriage Begin Before the Wedding?, Heinz sleeps with Ilse shortly before his marriage to Gisela, while his future wife is attracted to her childhood friend Achim. During the honeymoon, however, she decides to stay with Heinz. In The Self-Assured Woman, schoolgirl Jutta tries to seduce her married teacher, Günther. His wife, Monika, manages to talk the schoolgirl into behaving sensibly. The third episode, Mothers and Daughters, tells of 17-year-old Barbara, whom her mother keeps away from men, but then catches with her friend Vera. Her 20-year-old brother, Thomas, explains to their parents that they themselves have caused this behavior. On his advice, they give Barbara more freedom, and she meets the charming Jürgen. The fourth episode, Trust and Temptation, is about two couples who are friends. The jealous Eva plants the suspicion in her friend Gerda’s mind that Gerda’s husband, Werner, is having an affair with his co-worker. Werner manages to convince his wife that she had been afraid for no reason. In the end, it is not Gerda’s marriage that breaks up, but that of her jealous friend.
