When his neighbor Maria needs knee surgery, Otto enlists a shy, dependable bachelor to help care for the three children whose mothers know nothing of one another.
The story
Otto is father to three children by three different mothers, none of whom knows about the others; the children keep the secret too. His neighbor Maria, a former jazz singer, helps care for them, but must go to the hospital for knee surgery. Otto befriends Josef, a solitary bachelor and plumber with a fondness for astrology. Because Josef is orderly, conscientious, punctual, and dependable, Otto sees him as the ideal stand-in for Maria. Otto offers to help Josef overcome his shyness in exchange for Josef helping look after the children.

Otto is the father of three children by three different mothers. However, he missed the right moment to tell each mother about the children he had with the others, so the mothers know nothing about one another. The children are also keeping his secret. Otto gets help looking after the children from his neighbor Maria, a former jazz singer. But he runs into trouble when Maria has to go to the hospital for knee surgery. Otto befriends Josef, a solitary bachelor and plumber with a fondness for astrology. Josef loves order and is conscientious, punctual, and dependable; in Otto’s view, he is the ideal person to fill in for Maria. Otto offers to help Josef overcome his shyness in exchange for Josef helping him look after the children. Things work quite well for a while, but eventually Otto’s web of lies collapses. The mothers, Eva, Irene, and Hilde, Julia’s mother, figure out what he has been up to and forbid Otto from having contact with his children. Unable to keep watching his friend suffer, Josef intervenes with the three women, making a fresh start as a blended family possible.
