Full plot (contains spoilers)
The notorious convict Jacques Collin, alias Trompe-la-Mort, or Abbé Carlos Herrera, also known as Vautrin, escapes from the prison labor camp. By chance, he meets Lucien de Rubempré, an impetuous and eternally lovestruck man who crumples whenever he is rejected. Moved by this vulnerability, Collin takes him under his wing and does everything he can to ensure his protégé’s happiness, even resorting to the most devious schemes and scams, with the help of a gang of cunning rogues.
