The story

In summer 2000, married Venus Siebenberg moves from the countryside to Berlin to work on a novel project, at a time when internet access is still uncommon for many. A webcam on her desk lets visitors to her website watch her writing process. She receives suggestive emails from Hans Neumann, who calls himself Pluto, and rebuffs him. She draws inspiration from magazines and Éric Rohmer’s Autumn Tale, which she sees at a cinema, while her children also experiment with the internet and webcams.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the summer of 2000, the married Venus Siebenberg moves from the countryside to Berlin, where she is working on a novel project. At the time, the internet was still a relatively new medium, and internet access was not yet an everyday thing for many people. A webcam sits on her desk, allowing visitors to her website to watch her writing process. At the same time, she receives suggestive emails from Hans Neumann, who calls himself Pluto, and rebuffs him. She draws inspiration for her novel from reading magazines and from the Éric Rohmer film Autumn Tale, which she sees at the cinema. Meanwhile, Venus’s children are also experimenting with the internet and webcams. Venus notices that an additional webcam has been secretly installed in her office, and that she has also been watched during extramarital sex. She therefore wants to terminate the project. As Venus moves out of her office, she notices an oil painting in the stairwell showing her working at the computer. She packs it up and then drives back to her family.
