The story

When police arrest him during an apparent attempt to break into a building, Katharina responds with concern. At home, Ulrich's demanding work is leaving him with less and less time for the family.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Teacher Katharina Kramer is happily married to the architect Ulrich Kröger. They have their own house in Berlin, and their children get along well too. When Katharina returns to school after the holidays, she immediately notices a new student as he steps in to protect a classmate who is being bullied by others. However, he does so with a weapon, which Katharina immediately takes away from him. She looks through his file and learns that he was transferred to her school and her class from another high school because of disciplinary problems. Ben Simon is an intelligent, cynical young man who tries to provoke his teacher. In her eyes, he is a little “crazy,” but not a criminal. When the police arrest him while he is trying to break into a building, Katharina looks after her student with concern. It turns out that he was not trying to break in, but only wanted to take photographs. Despite Katharina and Ulrich’s otherwise happy marriage, tensions arise. Ulrich, who is currently working on three important projects and has less and less time for his family, is very successful in his profession. Ben’s advances are not unwelcome to Katharina, and in the end she falls in love with her student and sleeps with him, even though she knows that her daughter also has a crush on Ben. But Ben fascinates her with his mature, yet romantic, manner. Nevertheless, she is aware of her responsibility and does not want to continue the relationship. Having just been promoted to the school’s new principal, and with some students having discovered her relationship, she confesses her affair to her husband. He and her daughter Jule are both deeply disappointed. When Katharina discovers that she is pregnant, her husband gives her a choice: either she has an abortion, or she can leave. At first, she does leave and moves into a hotel. Ben also takes action and withdraws from school. Ben asks Katharina whether she is expecting a child. She says yes and claims the child is her husband’s. Ben realizes that this is a lie. During a scuffle in the car, they plunge into a river. Ben manages to free himself and also gets Katharina to shore. Katharina leaves the school in Ben’s place. Ulrich has a change of heart and reconciles with his wife.
