The story

Lowen Ashleigh, a published author in New York City, is struggling to find a wider audience for her work while grieving her mother's death. She is offered a unique opportunity to finish a popular novel series for the bestselling author Verity Crawford, who has been left catatonic following a near-fatal car accident. To complete the work, Lowen moves into the Crawford family home in rural Vermont. There, she must immerse herself in Verity's extensive notes and manuscripts while navigating a complex domestic dynamic involving Verity's husband, Jeremy, and their young son, Crew. As Lowen works, she begins to uncover unsettling details within Verity's private writings.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lowen Ashleigh accepts a job to finish a novel series for the catatonic author Verity Crawford. Moving into the Crawford's Vermont home, Lowen discovers Verity's autobiography, which depicts a disturbing obsession with her husband, Jeremy, and a chilling admission of intentionally causing their daughter's death. As Lowen and Jeremy begin an affair, they eventually confront Verity. After a violent altercation where Verity admits to faking her catatonia, they kill her and stage it as a drowning accident. Months later, while pregnant with Jeremy's child, Lowen finds a final letter from Verity. The letter reveals that Verity's autobiography was a writing exercise and that it was actually Jeremy who had drugged and attempted to kill her. The story ends with Lowen choosing to remain with Jeremy, unsure of which version of the truth to believe.
