Verlorene (2018)

Eighteen-year-old Maria feels free when she plays the organ. At home, she is responsible for Hannah, her younger sister, who is rebellious and plans to escape the village, and for their father, Johann. After their mother’s early death, the two very different sisters live alone with him in the Baden countryside. Then Valentin, a young carpenter on his travels, gets a job at their father’s business. Maria falls in love with him, making Hannah jealous. When Hannah hides personal belongings in the forest, she happens to discover that her sister is having a sexual relationship with their father; a hut in the forest serves as their love nest. The sisters find it difficult to talk about it. Maria makes Hannah promise to keep it secret, even though she herself hates the relationship, which binds her to their father and denies her a life of her own. She even destroyed her admission to a music program so she would not have to leave Hannah alone with Johann. She takes her resulting mood swings out on Valentin, who eventually offers to take her with him when he moves on. Now Hannah is the one who has to take responsibility for her sister. They leave Johann, burn the furnishings in the forest hut, and walk away.
