The story

In Tarnád, a struggling small town with little work or prospect of a future, brothers Máté and Joci face sharply different paths. Máté, a talented athlete, hopes winning an upcoming competition could earn him a sports scholarship and a way out of poverty, while his older brother is a petty con artist. Máté is close to Tibor Lukács, who warns him against following Joci’s example, and begins courting Tibor’s daughter Anita after she returns from her Budapest dormitory. When Máté and his companions happen upon a gang stealing pieces of a town statue for scrap, they witness the crime. After the thieves flee, police arrest Máté and his friends, who had run into the local library.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Two close-knit brothers living in difficult circumstances, Máté and Joci, live in Tarnád, a struggling small town plagued by problems. There is no decent work, no worthwhile cultural life, and no predictable future. Máté is a talented athlete, and he sees winning an upcoming competition as a way out of poverty, since a sports scholarship could take him to the capital. His father is in prison, and his mother is dead. His older brother, Joci, is a petty con artist who hangs out with a few guys in similar circumstances. One time, they steal some low-value goods from the shop where Máté works, and he naturally stops them. Máté is loved like a son by Tibor Lukács, who is of Roma descent and often warns him not to turn into a good-for-nothing like his brother. Tibi bá’s daughter, Anita, returns to the small town from her dormitory in Budapest and immediately catches Máté’s eye; he begins courting her. Anita is reserved at first, but Máté’s persistence gradually captures her attention. A gang plans to steal one of the town’s statues and sell it as scrap metal. Máté and the others happen upon them during the operation and witness what is happening. The thieves take several pieces of the statue and escape in a pickup truck. The police arrest Máté and his friends, who had been walking nearby and then fled into the local library. János Ács, the new police chief, offers to teach the young people how to regain their honor. He teaches them martial arts and gets them into better shape. Under the influence of this charismatic leader, they join a law-enforcement organization so they can actively and effectively confront the crime that is increasingly getting out of hand. The boys are happy because, for the first time in their lives, they feel a true sense of belonging. But things gradually slip out of their control as the Guard becomes a pawn of an uncontrollable political force.
