A young consultant must decide how to respond when his first assignment could cost factory workers their jobs.
The story
Philippe Seigner, a young consultant with a business-school degree, begins his first assignment at Janson, an industrial company being prepared for acquisition by a large group. The takeover is being arranged without the factory employees’ knowledge. Philippe is asked to profile every employee, a task that will help determine who is laid off after the acquisition. His superior, Hugo, urges him to rationalize the company and improve its profitability, while Eva, his new girlfriend, is outraged by the assignment and challenges him to consider the human consequences of his work.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film explores the subjection of businesses to market forces. It follows Philippe Seigner (Jérémie Renier), a young consultant with a business-school degree who works for a management consultancy. His first assignment is to conduct an audit of the industrial company Janson, in preparation for its acquisition by a large group—a takeover being arranged without the Janson factory employees’ knowledge. As he gets to work, he discovers that he will have to draw up a profile of every factory employee, which amounts to deciding who will ultimately be laid off following the acquisition. He is torn between Hugo (Laurent Lucas), his superior, who pushes him in a highly professional and extremely cold manner to rationalize and make the company more profitable, and therefore to lay people off, and Eva (Cylia Malki), his new girlfriend, who is outraged by Philippe Seigner’s assignment and makes him question the human consequences of his actions.
