Full plot (contains spoilers)

Louden Swain is a wrestler at Thompson High School who has just turned 18 years old. He decides to embark on a 'vision quest' to drop two weight classes so he can challenge Brian Shute, a menacing three-time state champion from rival Hoover High School. His drastic weight loss, performed against the wishes of his coach, causes him to suffer from frequent nosebleeds, leading him to forfeit a match he was winning. Meanwhile, his father takes in Carla, an aspiring artist from New Jersey who is traveling to San Francisco. Louden falls in love with Carla, but she realizes she is distracting him from his wrestling goals. Carla eventually decides to move out to continue her journey, but not before watching Louden's big match. Louden makes a comeback from a loss and pins Shute in the final seconds with an O-Goshi (over-under hip toss). After his victory, Louden delivers a monologue to the audience about loving people who deserve it.
