As an underground nuclear test looms in the Sahara, a young lieutenant and three unruly conscripts are assigned to secure the area.

The story

Two months after the Algerian War ends, an underground nuclear test is scheduled deep inside Mount Taourirt in the Sahara. Philippe, a young patriotic lieutenant, is ordered with three unruly conscripts—Jojo, Fred, and Javiez—to secure the surrounding area. Antoine, deputy chief of staff at the Ministry of War, also arrives to oversee preparations and ready the minister’s visit, accompanied by Louise, his mistress, who is Philippe’s mother. A geologist warns Antoine that the test is unusually risky because the mountain has already been weakened.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Algerian War has been over for two months, but Charles de Gaulle negotiated with the FLN in the Évian Accords to continue atomic tests in the Sahara Desert. An underground nuclear test is, moreover, due to take place the next day, deep inside Mount Taourirt. Philippe, a young, patriotic lieutenant, and three rather unruly conscripts—Jojo, Fred, and Javiez—are requisitioned to secure the surrounding area. At the same time, Antoine, deputy chief of staff at the Ministry of War, arrives with his mistress, Louise, who is none other than Philippe’s mother. This senior civil servant, tasked with overseeing the test, must also prepare for the minister’s arrival. A geologist then warns Antoine that this new explosion is particularly risky, as the mountain has already been weakened. And indeed, on [date unspecified], the accident happens: before the eyes of the officials gathered at an observation post five kilometres from the site of the explosion, Taourirt splits open, releasing a radioactive cloud. This will be the Béryl accident.
