The story

After creditors have had him imprisoned, the Levantine Volpone plots revenge with Mosca, a parasite with whom he shared a cell. Together they make those around Volpone believe that he is close to death and, having neither wife nor children, will leave his fortune to his best friend. Mosca then manipulates the people around Volpone, dangling the possibility of inheritance before them. The scheme turns on the hopes and greed of those who believe they may become Volpone’s heir.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

To take revenge on his creditors, who had had him thrown into prison, the Levantine Volpone devises a diabolical scheme. He uses Mosca, a parasite with whom he shared a cell, to make everyone believe he is at death’s door and will leave his fortune to his best friend, having neither wife nor children. By manipulating them one by one, Mosca dangles the prospect of the inheritance before the greedy people surrounding Volpone. In the end, it is Mosca, carefree and cynical, who is named heir and pockets the money.
