A bride-to-be fights to save her wedding from her disapproving future mother-in-law’s increasingly spiteful schemes.

The story

Rebecca and Lutz are in love and plan to marry soon, but their happy news is met with disapproval from Lutz’s mother, Gerlinde. A psychologist, Gerlinde believes Rebecca is not good enough for her son and arrives at the couple’s home determined to stop the wedding. She sets out to frighten Rebecca away with a series of nasty tricks. Rebecca, meanwhile, hopes to earn her future mother-in-law’s affection and respect, even making concessions such as giving up her dream wedding dress for Gerlinde’s choice. As the wedding approaches, Gerlinde’s interference puts the ceremony in jeopardy, while Rebecca begins to show a more determined side.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Rebecca and Lutz are in love and want to get married soon. Everyone reacts positively to the news of their upcoming wedding, except Lutz’s mother, Gerlinde, who one day unexpectedly shows up at the young couple’s door with her husband. Gerlinde, a psychologist by profession, is not pleased by the news and is convinced that her son’s bride-to-be is not good enough for him. She wants to get rid of Rebecca and prevent the imminent wedding at any cost. Obsessed and thinking of nothing but frightening her future daughter-in-law away, she devises all sorts of nasty tricks. Rebecca, for her part, is determined to win her future mother-in-law’s affection and respect. But Gerlinde is utterly unmoved by her efforts. Rebecca still refuses to give up: at first she gives in, and even agrees to forgo her dream wedding dress in favor of Gerlinde’s alternative—a hideous dress. Nevertheless, the peaceful walk down the aisle remains in jeopardy, and the fragile Rebecca increasingly shows more and more fighting spirit. Gerlinde gets the door slammed in her face twice, is caught riding without a ticket, and even has to take a drug test. Then the imposed wedding dress catches fire. When Gerlinde sends the police after Rebecca and Rebecca is arrested, the young woman’s patience finally runs out. The bride-to-be flies into a rage. She throws her mother-in-law out of the apartment and bans her from the house, saying she will lift the ban only if her mother-in-law improves her behavior in the future. The ban does not apply to Rebecca’s sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and father-in-law, who take the verdict with amusement. Rebecca and Lutz eventually get married on a hot-air balloon for safety reasons. The ceremony is performed by a pastor who is not actually good with heights. Gerlinde comes racing up too late in a car, but accidentally catches the bridal bouquet and then expresses concern for the newlyweds. She hopes the two of them do not catch a cold, and realizes that she is terrible.
