When a civil servant discovers that his new wife is also his friend’s mistress, he imagines increasingly drastic ways to get revenge.
The story
Franz Pokorný is an unhandsome, low-ranking civil servant at a government office in Brno. At a state holiday home, he befriends Karl, a deputy director, who encourages him to court Alice, a stunningly beautiful woman. To Franz’s surprise, Alice accepts his advances and eventually becomes his wife. In time, Franz begins to understand why Karl pushed him toward her: Alice has an apartment in Prague, several hours from Brno, and Karl expects to continue his relationship with her. Faced with this betrayal, Franz begins to plot his revenge, imagining violent possibilities.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Franz Pokorný is not a handsome man. His low-ranking position as a civil servant at a government office in the South Moravian city of Brno does little to make him more likeable. Before long, he meets Comrade Karl, a deputy director, at a state holiday home, and the two become friends. Karl encourages him to court the stunningly beautiful Alice. To Franz’s own surprise, Alice accepts his advances and eventually becomes his wife. After some time, Franz realizes why his pal Karl had pushed him toward Alice: she is Karl’s mistress and is meant to remain so, since Alice has an apartment in Prague, several hours away from Brno. Now Franz plots revenge: murder is in the air—his imagination is running at full tilt. Should he strangle Alice or shoot Karl? Or should he give up and end his own life? In the end, Franz finds a different way to get his revenge: he does what Karl does and takes a mistress alongside his wife.
