Full plot (contains spoilers)

Completely unexpectedly, Witse is visited by his estranged sister, Maggie. She confesses that she was once pregnant. After giving birth, she gave her daughter up for adoption. The daughter, now 30, recently came looking for her and asked for a place to stay, but Maggie turned her away. A few days later, the daughter’s body is found in an English military cemetery. Maggie now asks Witse to help find out exactly what happened to her. Witse initially refuses, until it turns out that several women have gone missing. He travels to the Westhoek to help the police. Since he has been retired for two years, they refuse his assistance. Witse then begins his own investigation, but his actions soon interfere with the investigating team, so in the end they accept his help, more or less. Witse is approached by a man named Bergmans. He tells him that he is addicted to sadomasochism. Recently, using the profile name Dickie, he ended up on a website where women are sexually tortured in extreme ways. At first he thought they were actresses, but he began to have doubts when the person who made the videos, a man named Dax, offered to torture a woman of Dickie’s choosing—on the condition that Bergmans himself first appear on camera. Bergmans is eventually arrested by the police for questioning, and the inspectors claim he was an accomplice. Bergmans then commits suicide. Witse decides to pass himself off as Dickie and arranges a meeting. Dax does show up, but spots the snipers and runs off. Witse pursues him, but Dax knocks him down. Dax recites a poem to him that ultimately leads to another English war cemetery, where a new body is found. The police set a new trap and arrange to meet Dax at the casino in Middelkerke. They place several actresses there who fit Dax’s profile. However, Dax does not enter the casino; instead, he abducts a female police officer outside. Witse creates some accounts on extreme-sex websites, posing as a very submissive woman. In the end, he makes contact with Dax. They arrange to meet, but Witse poses as Anita, the barmaid at the station buffet, for 8 p.m., after her shift ends. Dax, however, shows up several hours earlier. He lures Anita to his car. By this point, Witse and the police know that Dax plays games and does not stick to the arrangements he makes, so they are nearby and stop him. Dax holds Anita at knifepoint, but surrenders. The female officer is found, and Anita is recovering, though she is traumatized and will probably never return to the station buffet. Now that the serial killer has been caught, Witse takes the train back to Brussels. On the way, he has a heart attack and is taken to hospital by ambulance.
