When a bereaved teenage classmate moves into a respected teacher’s home, his daughter grows uneasy about the attention the newcomer gives her father.
The story
Dr. Stefan Rugge is a respected secondary-school teacher whose daughter Karin is close friends with her 17-year-old classmate Inge. After Inge’s father dies in an accident, Stefan—who had been friends with him—takes her into his home. Karin is troubled by the arrangement: her reserved nature clashes with Inge’s seemingly carefree manner, and she suspects that Inge’s interest in Stefan goes beyond friendship. Meanwhile, Karin is also trying to fend off unwanted advances from Erwin, a friend of Inge’s boyfriend. The household’s new arrangement leaves Karin wary of the changing closeness between her friend and her father.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Dr. Stefan Rugge, a man in his prime, has earned a good reputation as a teacher at a secondary school. His daughter Karin, by nature a rather well-behaved girl, is close friends with her 17-year-old classmate Inge, who has undeniable sex appeal and has made more than a few men hot and bothered. Inge, who likes to hang out with her boyfriend Paul at beat clubs and bars in her spare time, secretly starts falling for Dr. Rugge and seeks his company. Karin, meanwhile, has her hands full fending off advances from Erwin, a friend of Paul’s who is not her type at all. When Inge’s father is killed in an accident one day, the seductive “Lolita” is left completely alone, and Rugge, who had been friends with Inge’s father, decides to take her into his home. His daughter Karin is not pleased: her reserved way of life is hardly compatible with Inge’s lascivious, seemingly carefree nature. She also has a bad feeling that Inge sees more in her father than merely a friend of her late father—in other words, a father figure. Karin’s fears prove justified, because one day Stefan gives in to the seductive charms of the cat-eyed minor, which had begun with an innocent kiss at a music party, and ends up in bed with her. When a jealous classmate reports the brief affair to the police, Dr. Rugge must explain himself not only to his wife Hanna, who had also welcomed Inge in good faith, but above all in court, where he must answer for his conduct, which was still a criminal offense at the time. The charge is “seduction of a minor.” Dr. Rugge matter-of-factly explains in court how his lapse came about and takes the blame. He receives a suspended sentence and has to change professions. His wife forgives Stefan for his one-time lapse.
