A Dakota chief seeks justice amid a web of gold-trade corruption and armed robbery in the Black Hills.

The story

In winter, four Dakota travelers led by Chief Far-Seeing Hawk cross the Black Hills, hoping to join Chief Little Wolf’s Cheyenne group, which has fled its reservation. Their journey intersects with a struggle over gold and money shipments near Fort Robinson and Tanglewood. Trader Sam Blake controls the region’s gold trade, while mine boss Harrington seeks to expand his business. A gang led by Bashan repeatedly robs shipments, and the conflict becomes personal when Bashan shoots Hawk’s wife, Bluehair. As Harrington consolidates influence and appoints his employee Sleek deputy sheriff, former prospector Pat Patterson and Peter Hille try to keep order.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A group of four Dakota Indians, led by Chief Far-Seeing Hawk, travels through the Black Hills in winter. They want to join the Cheyenne group that fled their reservation, led by Chief Little Wolf. At the same time, a shipment belonging to trader Sam Blake arrives at Fort Robinson. Blake controls the gold trade in the Black Hills, preventing the accompanying mine boss, Harrington, from expanding his business. Blake is also transporting money for the GMI mining company. To get Blake into financial trouble, Bashan’s gang repeatedly robs the money shipments. Bashan is head of security at the gold mine and acts on Harrington’s orders. On the way back from a robbery, he shoots Bluehair, the chief’s wife. Hawk unsuccessfully tries to kill Bashan at the mine. In response to these events, Harrington gets his employee Sleek appointed deputy sheriff. The sheriff is former gold prospector Pat Patterson. Together with Peter Hille, he intends to maintain law and order in Tanglewood. When Patterson himself transports a shipment of money, Bashan takes control of Tanglewood with Sleek’s help. Now Harrington can put Blake under pressure without difficulty and demand repayment of the stolen money. Meanwhile, Hille discovers that Harrington himself is behind the robberies. When Bashan also tries to rob Patterson of the money, Hawk comes to his aid, and the robbery fails. The two ride together to Tanglewood and barricade themselves in the sheriff’s office. Patterson, however, is no longer able to take action against Harrington because Blake has switched sides and joined Harrington, while Harrington’s men are holding the justice of the peace captive. Far-Seeing Hawk manages to leave the office and kill his wife’s murderer, but is shot dead himself.
