The story
In the summer of 1967 in Breslau, twelve-year-old Paweł and his friends Piotr, Szymek, and Elka meet Dawid Weiser, a Jewish boy they call Dawidek. Dawid wins them over by giving them a rifle from an old ammunition depot, and the children play war in an old cemetery. When they plan an actual explosion by a river, Dawid disappears without a trace. Thirty years later, Paweł returns to Poland from Germany with his girlfriend Juliane, still haunted by what happened. He looks for his old friends, but they resist being reminded of the past.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is set in Breslau. In the summer of 1967, Paweł, Piotr, Szymek, and Elka are close friends. They are all 12 years old and spend the summer together. That summer, they meet Dawid Weiser, a Jewish boy. They call him Dawidek. The outsider Dawid wins the children over with a discovery. He gives them a rifle from an old ammunition depot. The children then start playing war in an old cemetery. They are startled by a madman. By a river, the children plan a real explosion. During the preparations, Dawid suddenly disappears without a trace and never reappears. Thirty years later, Paweł returns to Poland from Germany. He is accompanied by his German girlfriend, Juliane. Even 30 years after Dawid’s disappearance, Paweł is still haunted by the story. He sets out to find his old friends. But after such a long time, the mystery can no longer be reconstructed, and his old friends do not want to be reminded of it either.
