The story

After their children move out, Marianne and Günter, a couple in their seventies, settle into a joyless routine with little affection left between them. Each blames the other for their situation. Their memories have also begun to fail, though each assumes it is the other’s memory. When Günter seems to have forgotten their wedding anniversary, his friend Heinz gives him two pills said to restore memories quickly; Heinz has already tried them with his own wife.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In love, engaged, married. The great love. Forever. That’s how it begins. But why does it usually end differently? Why does the most wonderful feeling in the world, that music in your heart, so often fade and get forgotten? The children have moved out. You’re alone. And the future? Better not think about it. Marianne (Senta Berger) and Günter (Günther Maria Halmer), a couple in their seventies, have grown used to it. There isn’t much love left between them—instead, the same joyless routine rules every day. Each blames the other for the way things are. And for some time now, their memories have also been starting to fail. Of course, each thinks it’s only the other one’s memory. And now Günter has even forgotten their wedding anniversary. But he hasn’t, actually. His friend Heinz (Konstantin Wecker) has given him two miracle pills, which Heinz has already tried with his own wife: a pill that supposedly has the astonishing ability to bring memories back in record time. They take the plunge—and after just half an hour, the wondrous effects begin to kick in. Together, they travel back through time, and the story of their life together unfolds before them. They remember hardship and happiness, joy and illness, doubt and courage. At last, they reach that moment from an eternity ago when they first met. The pill’s effects really are astonishing, but there are side effects: after all, over the course of a life, there are things you’d rather forget…
