A music-loving boarding-school student schemes to bring a lively band to her school’s formal celebration, while romance and family expectations complicate her plans.
The story
After her daughter Evelyn repeatedly dances late into the night, music-box manufacturer Axel Bender sends her to a boarding school on Lake Wörthersee. Her shy boyfriend, Freddy, follows on Axel’s orders, ostensibly as a music-box representative but secretly to watch over her. Evelyn soon meets musician Hans Breuer and his band, who play at a nearby inn; she and the other girls sneak out to hear them. As the school’s annual celebration approaches, Evelyn hopes to arrange for Hans and his musicians to perform instead of the usual classical music, partly to help his career and impress her influential father.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
When his daughter Evelyn once again dances the night away and comes home much too late, music-box manufacturer and managing director Axel Bender takes action: he sends her to a boarding school on Lake Wörthersee. This displeases not only music-loving Evelyn but also her shy boyfriend, Freddy Kummer, who now wants to complain to Axel. Axel, however, takes a liking to him, spontaneously confides his woes about his wayward daughter, and appoints him his official music-box representative on Lake Wörthersee. In reality, Freddy is supposed to secretly keep an eye on Evelyn and her behavior there. Meanwhile, Evelyn has met musician Hans Breuer and his band on Lake Wörthersee. They play regularly at the Erlenhof, not far from the boarding school, and the girls just as regularly sneak out of the school at night to see the band. Hans writes a song for Evelyn, which she sings to an audience at the Erlenhof. Tensions arise between Hans and his girlfriend Gerti, the landlady of the Erlenhof. Freddy, who is staying at the Erlenhof, soon comforts her. The boarding school's annual end-of-year celebration is approaching. When Miss Fingerl, the organizer, falls ill, the girls have to arrange the celebration themselves. Classical music is usually played, but the girls want Hans and his band to perform. Evelyn hopes this will help Hans advance his music career, especially since her influential father will be among the audience. Soon Evelyn, Freddy, Gerti, and Hans come face to face, and the jealous couples have a major quarrel. Hans eventually ends his collaboration with Evelyn because he does not want to be promoted by her, and because Gerti would otherwise have canceled his engagement as well. Evelyn and the girls now want to put on the school's show on their own, if only to show Hans what they can do. Meanwhile, Axel Bender has learned about his daughter's romantic escapades and has traveled to Lake Wörthersee himself. The show finally begins, and at first everything goes well. The headmistress is kept distracted, and popular music is played instead of classical music. Soon, however, the performance threatens to fall apart—suddenly Hans and his band step in, having managed to recruit other performers for the show. The evening is a great success, and even the headmistress, Baroness von Grafenstein, suddenly takes a greater liking to modern music than to classical. Axel Bender is impressed by his daughter's talent and allows her to pursue a musical career as a singer. He is now also in favor of Evelyn marrying Freddy—but Evelyn has long since wanted to marry Hans, while Freddy and Gerti are now a couple.
