A renowned software developer newly entrusted with his children faces an ambitious superior who doubts the prospects of German software.

The story

Georg Meier is a renowned software developer whose career is thriving, but divorce has left him seeing his two children rarely. When his ex-wife temporarily entrusts them to him while she attends a professional development course, Georg begins to recognize fatherhood as an increasingly important part of his life. His ambitious superior, Mark Heller, sees Georg’s difficult period as an opportunity. Heller doubts that German-developed software can compete internationally and plans partnerships with Chinese and American companies, whose products he considers better and cheaper. He believes working with international software corporations could also increase his own profit margins.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Basically, Georg Meier is a renowned software developer whose career is on an upward trajectory. However, he is troubled by personal problems: his wife has divorced him, and he hardly sees the two children they had together anymore. Since his ex-wife is currently away on a professional development course, she has temporarily entrusted the children to him again. This leads him to realize that although his work—amid bits and bytes, interface connections, and a world of hyperlinks—can be only one side of his life, the other side, which is becoming increasingly important to him, is that of a caring father to his children. It turns out that his ambitious superior, Mark Heller, has been waiting for just such a moment, when his subordinate seems to be going through a bit of a rough patch. Moreover, Heller is not convinced that computer programs developed in Germany have any chance on the international market. He already has plans to pursue various partnerships with companies in the Chinese and American markets, which, in his view, can offer better and cheaper products. The power- and money-hungry Heller is also firmly convinced that working with international software corporations could significantly increase his own profit margins. As the story unfolds, software developer Georg falls in love with Sylvie, of all people—a former girlfriend of Heller’s. Heller had actually planned to use Sylvie to poison the working atmosphere throughout the department and get rid, all at once, of the entire department, which he considers nothing but a source of losses. At first, Heller’s plans succeed: Georg’s secretary, Helga Frühauf, leaves the company. Furthermore, the entire workforce has already been thrown into a state of fear, because nobody knows who will be next. Georg’s future at the company is now also at stake. This is the moment when Georg realizes the full extent of his superior Heller’s actions and decides that he will no longer put up with this behavior. Together with Sylvie, he plans a counterattack.
