Indebted garage owner Carlo and his employees bet that they can finish an upcoming marathon together, or Aslan, the neighboring gym owner, gets the shop.
The story
Carlo’s health and personal problems are compounded by the old-fashioned auto repair shop he has run for 30 years. Deep in debt, he keeps the shop open to avoid laying off his long-serving employees, who are also his best friends. In financial desperation, he accepts a bet from Aslan, owner of the neighboring gym: Aslan offers Carlo €50,000 if Carlo and his employees finish an upcoming marathon together; if they fail, Aslan gets the shop. The four reluctantly take on the challenge and choose Moah, who uses a wheelchair and would like to undertake an apprenticeship at Carlo’s workshop, as their coach.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Things have not been going well in Carlo’s life for quite some time. Alongside his health and personal problems, the old-fashioned auto repair shop he has run for 30 years has become his biggest burden. He keeps it from everyone that he is about €50,000 in debt and is really keeping the shop open only so he does not have to lay off his long-serving employees, who are also his best friends. In financial desperation, Carlo agrees to what seems like a hopeless bet: Aslan, the owner of the neighboring gym, offers him €50,000 if Carlo and his employees manage to cross the finish line together in an upcoming marathon. If they fail, Aslan gets the shop. Extremely reluctantly, all four nevertheless take on this seemingly hopeless challenge and choose Moah, who uses a wheelchair and would like to do an apprenticeship at Carlo’s workshop, as their coach. He clearly takes the job seriously and, as expected, quickly pushes the men—who sometimes smoke and drink and are unathletic—to their physical limits. Successes are rare, but during training a process of personal growth gradually begins for all the protagonists as well, forcing each of them to take a critical look at themselves and their lives.
