Full plot (contains spoilers)
To combat the rampant poaching in his hunting grounds more effectively, Baron Siebenzell hires the young Thomas Sebald as an additional gamekeeper. After arriving, Thomas falls in love with the pretty Maria. Maria’s father, however, is not only the all-powerful mayor of the mountain village but also the leader of a gang of poachers. Thomas thus becomes the mayor’s natural enemy. When Thomas shoots him in self-defense, the village accuses him of murder. He is ultimately sentenced to prison for manslaughter. Maria is left alone in the village, but is convinced that Thomas is in prison innocent. Thomas’s rival, Kaspar, sees his chance and courts Maria. Maria knows that Kaspar is also part of the gang, and agrees to marry him on the condition that he retract his false testimony against Thomas. Kaspar agrees, and Thomas is released from prison. When the village suspects Kaspar of having testified in Thomas’s favor before the court, and Kaspar flees into the forest, the gang pursues him. Kaspar is killed in an accident. At last, Maria and Thomas come together.
