An elderly couple attempts to maintain a sense of normalcy while surviving the immediate aftermath of a nuclear attack.

The story

Jim and Hilda Bloggs are an aging couple living in a rural cottage in Sussex, England. As tensions of the Soviet–Afghan War threaten to escalate into a nuclear conflict, Jim follows government-issued 'Protect and Survive' instructions to prepare their home for a potential strike. When a nuclear attack occurs, the couple retreats to a shelter. They emerge to find their world transformed by fallout and a nuclear winter. Despite the destruction of all utilities and communications, the couple remains stoic, attempting to maintain their daily routines and remain optimistic that a rescue operation will eventually be launched to help them in the devastated landscape.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jim and Hilda Bloggs, an elderly couple in rural Sussex, prepare for a nuclear war by following 'Protect and Survive' guidelines. After a nuclear strike hits, they emerge to find their home isolated in a nuclear winter, with all communications and utilities destroyed. While Jim remains optimistic that rescue is coming, Hilda's health begins to decline due to radiation sickness. They endure days of isolation, facing a lack of food, water, and the physical toll of radiation. As their situation becomes desperate, they eventually retreat into protective sacks. In their final moments, Jim recites 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' while Hilda dies. The film ends with a Morse code signal for 'MAD' (mutually assured destruction) as the sun rises over the ruined landscape.
