The story
After a plane crash in Siberia, Russian ballet dancer Nikolai 'Kolya' Rodchenko is recognized by a KGB officer. The officer brings Kolya to Leningrad, where he is tasked with performing at the Kirov. To ensure his cooperation, the KGB recruits tap dancer Raymond Greenwood, a defector from the United States, to look after him. The two dancers, who have defected in opposite directions, must navigate their cultural differences and the pressures of the Soviet regime. To further influence Kolya, the KGB involves Galina Ivanova, a former ballerina and Kolya's old flame, who still harbors feelings for him.

Nikolai 'Kolya' Rodchenko, a Russian ballet dancer who defected to the West, is injured in a plane crash in Siberia and captured by KGB officer Colonel Chaiko. Chaiko brings Kolya to Leningrad, intending to use him for a performance at the Kirov. He recruits Raymond Greenwood, an American tap dancer who defected to the Soviet Union, to act as Kolya's companion. To ensure Kolya's cooperation, the KGB involves Galina Ivanova, a former ballerina and Kolya's former lover. Despite initial friction due to their different backgrounds and artistic styles, Kolya and Raymond form a deep friendship. When Raymond learns his wife Darya is pregnant, he decides they must escape the Soviet Union. With the help of Galina, who still loves Kolya, they plan a daring escape. During the attempt, Raymond stays behind to delay Chaiko, allowing Kolya and Darya to reach the U.S. consulate. Raymond is captured and eventually traded for a political prisoner from Latin America, leading to a final reunion with Darya and Kolya.
