Two families in Vienna and Berlin lead parallel lives shaped by sharply contrasting values.
The story
The Berndörfers of Vienna and the Grollmanns of Berlin lead parallel lives, revealing similarities and contrasts between the families. Mr. Grollmann is a hard-working industrialist who places duty and integrity above all else; his family is industrious and proper. The Berndörfers, by contrast, sometimes cut corners. Their loyalty to old traditions contributes to payment difficulties for the head of the household.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story is about a Viennese family and a Berlin family—the Berndörfers of Vienna and the Grollmanns of Berlin—their similarities and differences, whose stories unfold in parallel and are contrasted in this lighthearted tale. On one side is Mr. Grollmann, a hard-working Berlin industrialist for whom duty and integrity come above all else. His family is industrious, Prussianly proper, and puts work first. By contrast, the Berndörfer family is happy to cut corners now and then. As a result, the Berndörfers in the Austrian capital face problems unknown in Berlin: out of loyalty to old traditions they simply refuse to give up, the head of the Berndörfer household runs into payment difficulties. Yet the sisters Berlin and Vienna reach out to each other despite all their differences in character. After the Berndörfer patriarch dies, Director Grollmann offers to renovate the old Berndörfer house. This brings the two families very close and culminates in the marriage of two members of the families.
