The story

Vienna prosecutor Fida Emam, whose roots are in Egypt, lives with her mother, Afifa, and daughter, Aline. When police officer Markus Glösl summons her to a bridge over the Danube, she learns that financial-market authority employee Karl Burger has been found hanged. Suicide is initially presumed, but Glösl doubts the circumstances and calls for an autopsy and a murder investigation. Fida learns from Burger’s colleague that he had recently been investigating the Vienna private bank Meer on suspicion of money laundering. At home, she must also reckon with Aline’s sympathy for an association and her feelings for classmate Djamal Hemidi.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The thriller tells the story of an Egyptian-Viennese family, in which three generations of women living under one roof become caught up in a political conspiracy. Vienna prosecutor Fida Emam, whose roots are in Egypt, lives with her mother, Afifa, and her daughter, Aline. One day, police officer Markus Glösl summons her to a bridge over the Danube, where Karl Burger, an employee of the financial market supervisory authority, has been found hanged. Suicide is initially presumed, but Glösl has doubts given the circumstances and insists on an autopsy and the opening of an investigation on suspicion of murder. The autopsy confirms that Burger was murdered. From Burger’s colleague Ferdinand Mahler, Fida learns that Burger had recently been investigating the Vienna private bank Meer on suspicion of money laundering. The bank had business ties to the radical Islamic association Milla. The bank’s CEO, Stefan Meer, had acquired a Vienna apartment building from the association at an inflated price through a shell company. Meer also has excellent connections in politics and the ministry, including with department head Schneider. The prosecutor must also come to terms with the fact that her daughter Aline sympathizes with the association and has fallen for her classmate Djamal Hemidi, who is often in and out of Imam Ahmed Rahimsai’s home. During a break-in at Fida’s apartment, her computer and a USB stick containing case documents are stolen. The ministry puts pressure on Judge Michael Körner, Aline’s father. The search warrant for Meer Bank is unexpectedly revoked, and the senior prosecutor’s office removes Fida from the case. In the Burger case, a suspect, Peter Unger, turns himself in to Glösl. He confesses to strangling Burger during sexual activity, but Glösl doubts his account. Meanwhile, the police discover surveillance-camera footage showing Aline buying chemicals to make explosives. Based on a video in which Aline threatens unbelievers with death, it is assumed that she is planning a suicide bombing at Vienna’s main railway station. Djamal Hemidi is arrested there, while Aline escapes to her mother. Rahimsai shoots Fida at the station, whereupon Commissioner Glösl incapacitates Rahimsai with a shot. Fida wakes up in hospital, where Burger’s colleague Mahler visits her and tells her he will continue investigating Meer Bank. Stefan Meer is eventually found hanged in his office, where Glösl arrests department head Schneider because he was the liaison between Meer Bank and the Islamic association Mila.
