Full plot (contains spoilers)
The year is 1905. Ferdinand and Josef are two consummate Viennese coffeehouse waiters who can tell what their regular customers want just by looking at them. They also compete for the favor of their boss, Christine Lechner, the widowed but still youthful owner of the café. The younger, handsome Ferdinand seems to have the advantage. But when he takes on the daughter of a deceased friend in a fatherly way, Christine misunderstands the situation, leading to a series of misunderstandings that culminate in Ferdinand losing his job and opening his own café next door. The dubious Baron von Brelowsky also takes the naive young country girl under his wing, but with more self-serving intentions. Ferdinand sees through him, of course, and when the conflict between him and his boss escalates, the scatterbrained but ultimately good-natured Josef does his best to reconcile the two. Naturally, all ends well: little Mizzi from the country gets engaged to a young composer. The quarrelsome couple also makes up, and the two cafés are united.
