Full plot (contains spoilers)

Count Lordion Chamberley is an old, frail, ailing man. In exchange for a life annuity, he bequeaths all his possessions to the “Charity” association. Strangely, the old nobleman simply refuses to die, and after ten years the association has had enough and hires detective Holmes to investigate this mysterious affair. Holmes follows the trail and discovers something fantastic: Chamberley’s servant, William Voss, was determined to get his hands on his master’s million-fortune. So he first built a prosthesis and eventually an entire human being—a replica of Count Chamberley—which concealed his master’s death and replaced the dead count as a mechanical puppet. Detective Holmes unmasks the impostor and puts an end to the charade.
