A dandruff-shampoo salesman’s mistaken belief about the woman he loves leaves him longing for an ex-wife who never loved him.
The story
Ernst Winckelmann sells dandruff shampoo and is described as an honest soul capable of deep feelings. He loves Aline, and she loves him, but he convinces himself that she cannot feel deeply. As a result, he pines for his ex-wife, who never loved him. Aline’s father, a pub landlord in Barmbek, is also unhappy: he mourns his wife, who died eight years earlier, and longs to return to Florida, where he believes he was once happy. These are identified as central aspects of the film’s plot.
