Full plot (contains spoilers)
Midsummer in Munich. The young Lara is overwhelmed by raising her one-year-old daughter, Olivia, and drives a taxi at night. Her boyfriend, Jacob, is wearing himself out in his stressful job as a chef at an upscale restaurant. His boss often criticizes him, and he escapes into an affair with a colleague. As Lara increasingly feels that she has been left alone with the child, she silently leaves Olivia in her stroller at the restaurant where Jacob works. She travels to her home region of South Tyrol, where her sister Ida is looking after their late parents’ farm with the help of a temporary worker, Rafael, a young man from Berlin. Lara’s arrival brings an old conflict between the sisters back to the surface. After their parents died in an accident abroad, Lara had moved to Munich and had not contacted Ida again. The sisters clash fiercely at their very first meeting. Gradually, they begin to understand that they are in similar situations and living far from the lives they dreamed of: taking over the farm has left Ida with hardly any time to work on a book and establish herself as an author, while Lara gave up her planned medical studies in Munich because of her child. Meanwhile, Jacob tries to adjust to his unfamiliar role as a single father and loses his job. When he sets off for South Tyrol and confronts Lara, it becomes clear that he, too, cannot reconcile his life goals with the demands of reality. Although she loves Rafael, Ida decides to send him back to Berlin. Shortly afterward, she falls down a flight of stairs. As a thunderstorm passes over the area, Ida comes to. The final scenes seem to suggest that Ida has become a successful writer and has a husband and a child. Jacob has taken care of raising Olivia, while Lara has successfully completed her medical studies in Munich. She celebrates her graduation with Ida, Olivia, a woman, and an old man. Since Jacob is not there, the two of them are presumably no longer together.
