Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film depicts four segments across different seasons. In winter, Barnes Hawthorne meets Remi Aguilar at a train station while she is preparing to tour Columbia University. They discuss their futures—Remi wants to be a lawyer, while Barnes plans a gap year. After a brief interaction, Remi declines a date from Barnes following a cyclist accident. In the spring, they reconnect at a prom after being ditched by their dates. They spend the evening together, and despite Remi's upcoming move to Harvard, they decide to stay together for the summer. On the Fourth of July, Remi tells her parents they plan to volunteer in Costa Rica together, but she is grounded after her parents react angrily. They leave for a lake house, where Remi crashes a jeep while drunk driving, leading to a breakup. In the fall, Remi is at Harvard and Barnes is in Boston working as a band assistant. They reconnect on campus but agree to stay apart. Remi later crashes a concert to confess her feelings, but Barnes initially declines. Finally, the band helps Barnes realize his feelings, and they reunite with a kiss outside her dorm.
