The story
Bruno, an Italian, and his partner Jutta, a businesswoman, set out on a weeklong cycling tour from Munich to Merano along the Via Claudia Augusta, hoping to leave work behind. Bruno has borrowed a helmet camera from a bike shop to test, though Jutta would rather enjoy the scenery “live.” At the start of the trip, hotel owner Axel Hartmann, who knows Jutta from a trade magazine, offers to bring her wellness concept into his hotel chain, prompting Bruno’s jealousy. Bruno plans to tell Jutta he has lost his job, while she also has news to share; after their first overnight stop goes awry, the couple struggle to find a moment alone.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Bruno, an Italian, and his partner Jutta, a businesswoman, are planning a cycling tour along the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route from Munich to Merano. Bruno has borrowed a modern helmet camera from a bike shop, intending to test it for the shop. Jutta is less enthusiastic about it and would rather enjoy the scenery “live.” At the very start of their trip, Jutta meets hotel owner Axel Hartmann, who knows her from a trade magazine and offers to incorporate her wellness concept into his hotel chain. Bruno is not at all pleased; after all, they wanted to forget about work for once while on vacation. He is also a little jealous of the handsome Axel. During their romantic cycling trip, Bruno plans to confess to Jutta that he lost his job weeks ago. Jutta, too, wants to confide a secret in him during their weeklong trip. But after their first overnight stay turns out differently than planned—the inn they had intended to stay at is closed for its weekly rest day—there is no romantic mood for Jutta to bring up her news. Not only do they have to settle for a farmer’s barn as emergency accommodation, but the touring cyclist Marga Hoppenrieder also barges in, ruining any chance for the two of them to be alone with her effusive chatter. Marga also seems to take a liking to handsome Bruno, so Jutta and Bruno slip away early the next morning without saying goodbye. The sunny weather makes the next leg of the journey very pleasant, and even a brief shower does not spoil their holiday mood, but they enjoy an involuntary dip in a lake rather less. Relieved to find the lovely room Bruno had planned for their overnight stay, Jutta now tells him about her plan to expand her business with a branch and take out a loan. Bruno is annoyed that his wife made the decision weeks ago without involving him. A romantic dinner puts them both back on good terms, but a rowdy group of bowlers bothers Bruno so much that he leaves the room, and Jutta has to dine alone. To make up with him, she brings a plate of food to his room, where Bruno is watching the videos he shot with the helmet camera. By accident, he sends them all—including the embarrassing footage of their involuntary dip in the lake—to the bike-shop owner. The owner finds it so amusing that he even posts it online and shows it on a large screen in his shop. Meanwhile, Bruno and Jutta cover part of their route in a shuttle bus with a bike trailer. Unfortunately, Marga Hoppenrieder has had the same idea and gets on their nerves again with her nonstop chatter. However, Marga tells Bruno that he and Jutta are inadvertently appearing online. He immediately calls the bike-shop owner, who points out the fine print in their contract. After a flat tire, Bruno and Jutta happen to run into Axel Hartmann, who puts them and their bikes in his car and takes them to the nearest guesthouse. Bruno realizes this was not just an act of kindness: Axel wanted to impress Jutta. But Bruno can impress his wife, too, because he has reserved a very special room at the guesthouse. At last, he manages to confess to Jutta that he is unemployed, but he does not notice that she has already fallen asleep from exhaustion and has not heard a thing. Jutta learns the news from someone else and is now extremely angry. She doubts whether she can still really trust Bruno if he has hidden something so important from her for weeks. Somewhat upset, they continue their tour. When they reach the Reschen Pass, they get lost as well and have to spend the night outdoors. While trying to make a campfire, they run afoul of the law, and an Italian official takes them to the police station. So they will not have to spend the night in a cell, Jutta calls Axel, who gets them out of their predicament. It is also from him that Jutta learns about the embarrassing video online. After an argument, she breaks up with Bruno and goes with Axel to one of his hotels. Although she can finally let herself be thoroughly pampered, she is still unhappy because she misses Bruno. Bruno meets Marga again and can barely fend off her advances. He, too, longs only for Jutta. Jutta’s friend Uschi, who is supposed to water her flowers while she is away, becomes worried when she can no longer reach her by phone. On impulse, she and her husband Christian travel to Italy to catch up with them. There, Uschi finally gets a phone signal and finds Jutta at Axel’s hotel. The two of them set out to look for Bruno. They find him in the little chapel where Bruno and Jutta first met. Neither of them doubts their love for the other anymore, and they make up.
