A school director’s hopes of inheriting a fortune hinge on an absurd will, a chimpanzee foster child, and a crime he cannot seem to commit.
The story
Pepe Nietnagel meets Gotthold Emanuel Taft, the twin brother of school Director Gottlieb Taft, who left for Africa years earlier. Seeking revenge for his brother’s stuffy criticism, Gotthold sends a letter announcing his own death and promising the school a large inheritance. But the will sets difficult conditions: the director must take in an African foster child—actually a chimpanzee—and commit a crime. It also stipulates that no student at Mommsen Gymnasium may be held back. The upright director struggles to satisfy the requirements, while Pepe and his friends become involved in the resulting complications.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Pepe Nietnagel meets Gotthold Emanuel Taft, the twin brother of Director Gottlieb Taft, who emigrated to Africa years ago. Gotthold wants to get even for his stuffy brother’s criticism of him, so he sends him a letter announcing his own death and promising the school a large inheritance. The messenger is Notary Munk, the father of one of Pepe’s classmates. For Director Taft to receive the inheritance, however, he must meet several conditions in the will: he must take in an African foster child, who turns out to be a chimpanzee, and also commit a crime—something the upright man finds very difficult. Another condition is that no student at Mommsen Gymnasium may be held back. Trying to fulfill the conditions leads to all sorts of difficulties and complications, in which Pepe and his friends are, of course, also involved. Dr. Taft tries his hand at being a thief, an illegal fisherman, and a drunk driver, but to his dismay he discovers that the police are happy to turn a blind eye when the local high-school principal is involved. With Pepe’s help, he finally lands in jail as an apparent duelist, while in the meantime his twin brother poses as the “director” and surprises the students and faculty with an entirely different personality. After he is released from prison, the brothers meet, and the real Dr. Taft not only forgives his brother but also helps him take an involuntary dip in the swimming pool he sponsored.
